Dussehra- a celebration of good over evil!
Everyone loves a good dose of festive indulgence, and it’s that time of the year when excitement is at its peak. Dussehra is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated with great splendor and enthusiasm across the country. The festival of Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami and is celebrated every year on the 10th day of Shukla Paksha of the Ashwani month of the Hindu Lunar Calendar. Dussehra is a Sanskrit word ‘Dasha’ means ten (the ten heads of Ravana), and the word ‘Hara’ means defeat. It is an auspicious festival and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
Why is Dussehra celebrated?
Since India is a land of diverse cultures and traditions, different regions in India celebrate Dussehra in different ways, eastern and southern states celebrate Dussehra as the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura who had a head of buffalo. It begins on the first day of Navratri and continues for nine days.
On the other hand, most northern and western states of India celebrate Dussehra as Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana.
The festival of Dussehra, in north India, is celebrated by organizing Ramleela, Ramayana’s theatrical enactment, burning massive effigies of Ravana along with his brother Kumbhakarana, and Meghanada as a part of the celebrations.
